Wedding at St. Bernard Catholic Church and Portage Country Club

There’s something uniquely beautiful about photographing a wedding where you already feel like part of the family. Jane and Andrew’s stunning Akron, Ohio wedding was not just a celebration of love, it was a deeply personal experience for me. Over the years, David has had the honor of photographing Jane’s family, capturing portraits, special events, and even her talented mother’s performances. Our families have shared music, memories, and now, this unforgettable day.

A Morning of Elegance at Portage Country Club

The day began at the historic Portage Country Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious country clubs in the United States. The Tudor-style mansion, with its timber-framed architecture, brick and stone exterior, and rich history dating back to the 1920s, provided a timeless and luxurious backdrop for Jane’s bridal preparations.

Jane got ready in the elegant bridal suite on the second floor. She wore a breathtaking ivory strapless silk taffeta gown with a cathedral train and intricate lace appliqué. Her look was completed with a classic pearl necklace and earrings, and her hair styled in a romantic loose chignon. Her engagement ring was a showstopper, featuring a stunning center diamond encircled by a floral diamond halo, framed in yellow gold. For her “something blue,” she carried a treasured heirloom handkerchief edged in delicate blue handmade lace.

Her bridesmaids wore flowing, forest green gowns paired with gold and deep coral floral jewelry that perfectly echoed the colors in Jane’s bouquet.

A Grand Ceremony at St. Bernard Catholic Church

The couple said their vows at the family’s church, St. Bernard Catholic Church in Akron. If you’ve ever seen this church, you know it’s a perfect vision. Designed in the German-Romanesque Revival style with Baroque influences, the church is reminiscent of cathedrals in Germany’s Rhineland region. It’s, in my opinion, the most beautiful church in Akron, with its soaring ceilings, ornate marble, and intricate details.

One especially touching moment was Jane’s mother singing during the ceremony, bringing tears to many eyes, including mine.

Portraits with the Pups and Sunset Magic

After the ceremony, we made a quick stop at Jane’s family home to capture some quiet moments and a few joyful ones with their beloved dogs. It was a relaxed and meaningful interlude before heading back to the Portage Country Club for golden hour portraits on the golf course.

The light was pure magical, soft, golden, and glowing, making Jane and Andrew look like something out of a storybook. These sunset photos are some of my favorites from the day.

A Reception Full of Joy, Tradition, and Sweet Touches

The ballroom at Portage Country Club was transformed into a romantic, organic garden. Tables were adorned with a mix of tall and low centerpieces filled with cream and deep coral florals, accented by lush, loose greenery and the warm glow of dozens of votive candles. Each guest received a small jar of honey labeled with “Thank you for sharing our sweet day,” a charming and thoughtful gift.

Andrew twirled Jane into their first dance to the sounds of a live band, setting the tone for a joyful evening. In a unique twist, the couple used a sword to cut their wedding cake, an unexpected and fun moment that had everyone cheering.

The night ended with dancing, laughter, and even a few lively polka numbers, true to the couple’s heritage and full of heart.

Jane and Andrew’s wedding was a perfect blend of tradition, elegance, and personal touches. From the grandeur of St. Bernard Catholic Church to the historic charm of Portage Country Club, every detail was intentional and meaningful.

It was an honor to capture such a heartfelt day, and even more special to do it for a family we’ve  grown to know and love over the years.
